Symposium on Coastal Insurance Presented July 20-21
The Richard S. Brantley Risk & Insurance Center at Appalachian State University is sponsoring the insurance symposium “Insuring Coastal Properties” July 20-21 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Cent er on campus. The symposium is designed for insurance agents, insurance regulators, legislators and others who work in the insurance industry, as well as students and faculty who are interested in the topic.

Martha Guy Summer Institute Students Will Be on Campus for Fifth Consecutive Summer
This summer, for the fifth consecutive year, we are pleased to host twenty four high school juniors who are participating in the Martha Guy Summer Institute (MGSI) for Future Business Leaders. This years' group will be on campus or traveling in New York City and Washington D.C. from July 6 until July 26. MGSI participants gain exposure to basic business principles and entrepreneurship through lectures and activities presented by faculty and business professionals, introducing the group to basic business principles.

Medlin Named Chair of Department of Computer Information Systems; Ellis Interim Chair of Economics
Dawn Medlin has been named chairperson of the Department of Computer Information Systems. She had served as interim chair of the department since July 2007.

Faculty Honored for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service
FEA winnersFour Appalachian State University faculty members in the Walker College of Business have received the college’s 2008 Award for Excellence. The award for excellence in service was presented to Dr. Todd Cherry; Dr. Claudia Kelley received the award for teaching and Dr. David Dickinson was honored for his research contributions.
Father and Son Co-Write Book on Changing Business Trends
CIS Professor Richard E. Crandall has had his book “New Methods of Competing in the Global Marketplace: Critical Success Factors from Service and Manufacturing” published by CRC Press, a division of Taylor and Francis Group.

Southern Shows CEO Says Persistence, Integrity and a Touch of Craziness are Keys to Business Success
Joan ZimmermanJoan H. Zimmerman, president and chief executive officer of the Charlotte-based Southern Shows Inc., never thought twice about her gender when she co-founded the multi-million dollar business. “I do not think that any of the qualities that you need for success are gender based,” she said in response to an audience member’s question during a presentation at April 1 Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture.

Appalachian Students Represent United States at Global Conference
More than 300 university students representing over 35 countries gathered in Barcelona, Spain, March 25-31 to participate in the Iberoamerican Leadership Congress. Only four students from the United States were in attendance, and three of them were from Appalachian State University.

First CARET Distinguished Speaker Sets Bar High
Dr. Gary Dickson, one of the founding fathers of the Management Information Systems (MIS) discipline, kicked off the Center for Applied Research on Emerging Technology (CARET) distinguished speaker series. The event, held on March 28, gave Dickson a forum to present his thoughts on the evolution of the discipline and detail his role in establishing both MIS Quarterly, the primary journal in the field, and ICIS, the leading academic conference in the field.

Center for Entrepreneurship Begins New Mentoring Program
Students at Appalachian State University will be able to learn firsthand about entrepreneurship from successful business owners in the region. An inaugural group of 10 students will be selected as Dale Tweedy Mentoring Program for Entrepreneur Scholars, which begins this fall.

Duane D. Daggett Professorship Named
During the recent Harlan E. Boyles CEO Lecture, the Walker College of Business announced the inauguration of a new professorship. The Duane D. Daggett Endowed Professorship was established thanks to a gift from M. Lee Barnes, Jr. '90, a former student of the former Walker management professor (1986-2000), and his wife, Christy L. Barnes.

North Carolina Bankers Association Professorship
Dr. Harry M. Davis, the North Carolina Bankers Association Professor of Banking, kicked off a campaign to increase the endowment for the Professorship during the annual convention of the NCBA in June 2007. The campaign received pledges of nearly $485,000 which will be paid through 2009. These additional commitments will raise the endowment to over $1 million.
Dean's Club Enjoying Success
The Walker College Dean's Club, a giving society designed to "do more" for COB students and faculty, is enjoying its most successful year since its inception in 2002. With over $67,000 raised in 2007-08, this important fund is supporting new scholarships, travel and programs.

Department of Accounting Awards
The department of accounting has recently awarded research fellowships resulting from private gifts. Ron Marden was awarded the Cherry, Bekaert & Holland fellowship, and Claudia Kelley and Bill Baker received Dixon Hughes fellowships.

The department also awarded a Grant Thornton research grant to Mary Ann Hofmann, a Dixon Hughes research grant to Lynn Stallworth and the Accounting Department research grant to Doug Roberts.
