Major in Finance and BankingA Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree (BSBA) with a major in Finance and Banking consists of 24 hours in addition to the College of Business core courses required for the BSBA degree. Nine hours come from the structured finance and banking core, six hours come from Elective Set 1 and nine hours come from Elective Set 2. CORE - Required (9 s.h.)All classes three semester hours.

ELECTIVE SET 2 (9 s.h.)Courses in Elective Set 1 not taken as part of the 6-hour requirement may be used to meet the requirements in Elective Set 2. All classes three semester hours.
Total hours for BSBA with a major in finance and banking is 24 s.h. FP Certificate in Financial Planning - Courses with FP listed in are the recommended courses for students who wish to pursue a career in financial planning. In addition, the completion of these courses with a minimum grade of C- in each course will qualify students to apply to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) certification exam. Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER", and CFP (with flame logo)®, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements. Appalachian State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER", and CFP (with flame logo)® certification marks. CFP certification is granted only by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements. * FIN 4620 and FIN 4622 is a two-course sequence. Students taking FIN 4620 must take FIN 4622 immediately after FIN 4620. Student will earn grades and credit for both classes upon completion of FIN 4622. Students are admitted into FIN 4620 and FIN 4622 by permission of instructor only. ** FIN 3900 Internship is a 6 or 9 semester hour course, but only 3 of these semester hours may apply to meeting the requirements for the major. Risk Management and InsuranceA Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a major in risk management and insurance consists of 24 hours in addition to the College of Business core courses required for the BSBA degree. The course requirements for the risk management and insurance major are: nine hours from the structured risk management and insurance core, nine hours from the sub-area, and six hours of electives from College of Business courses numbered 3000 or above. Financial Planning CertificateAppalachian State University is a registered program with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) in Denver, Colorado. The Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance offers a curriculum that covers the knowledge base needed to succeed in the field of personal financial planning as determined by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. At ASU, the course requirements to apply for the CFP® Certification Examination consist of six courses:
These classes are offered through a degree program (BSBA – Finance) and a certificate program in financial planning. Currently, classes meet only at the Walker College of Business in Boone, North Carolina. Successful completion of the either program, with a C- or better in each course, will make a student eligible to apply for the CFP® Certification Examination. The CFP® certification is an internationally recognized mark of distinction and is a symbol of the highest level of professionalism in the field of Financial Planning. CFP® certification is granted by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. In order to be a CFP® certificant a student must pass the CFP® Certification Examination, complete three to five years of work experience in a financial planning field, and comply with CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. CFP Board can not predetermine whether individuals will meet certain requirements, but will offer counsel to individuals seeking guidance about the education, bachelor's degree or experience requirements. |
