Dr. Richard Schaffer is Professor Emeritus of International and Business Law, having retired from full time teaching in 2002 after twenty-five years of service to Appalachian. His many students have gone on to careers in international business, here and abroad. He received the Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi and the Master of Laws from New York University. A former practicing attorney, Dr. Schaffer joined the Appalachian faculty in 1977, coming from the United Nations Department of International Economic and Social Affairs (CSDHA/CRIMP).

Dr. Schaffer was instrumental in developing the college's international business and study abroad programs, and served as Director of International Business Studies. He has both studied and taught overseas, and has consulted with U.S. business schools on the internationalization of their programs. Dr. Schaffer has served as Director for Education for the North Carolina World Trade Association, one of the largest such industry trade groups in the United States. In that capacity he promoted relationships between North Carolina universities, government and industry, and brought recognition to Appalachian's international business program. He has consulted with industry on a range of international business subjects, and has lectured widely on international education issues.

While at Appalachian, Dr. Schaffer served as visiting consultant to the United Nations on projects related to multinational corporations, corrupt practices and socio-economic development, and as rapporteur of international working groups on international economic criminality (New York, San Jose, Vienna).

Dr. Schaffer is the lead author of International Business Law published by International Thomson Publishing (West), now in its fifth edition (2002). The text is generally considered the preeminent book in its field and is used at top business schools worldwide, including Stockholm, London, Beijing, and throughout the U.S and Canada. Schaffer is now president and CEO of a down products manufacturing firm, and is active in the international home textile and home furnishings industries. He continues his close relationship with Appalachian and his commitment to Appalachian's students and programs.
