The Department of Economics offers a diverse set of courses that cover standard fields such as micro and macro theory, experimental, environmental, labor, international trade, and development economics.

The strength of the Department of Economics is representative of the overall academic quality of the university. Appalachian ranked 5th among public and 10th among all comprehensive universities in the south in U.S. News and World Report. Appalachian was also ranked 27th nationally among all public universities for education value by Kiplinger and chosen as the college of the year among all comprehensive universities by Time magazine.

David Dickinson, co-author of Cognitive Dissonance, Pessimism, and Behavioral Spillover Effects
This paper reports results from a unique two-stage experiment designed to examine the spillover effects of optimism and pessimism. In stage 1, we induce optimism or pessimism onto subjects by randomly assigning a high or low piece rate for performing a cognitive task.
