Walker College Career Planning Timeline
Freshman Year
Building your resume and positioning yourself for your job search begins NOW!
- Pay attention to what you like and dislike in your course subjects.
- Get involved in campus organizations.
- Start off on the right foot with good grades.
- Pursue a summer job that relates to your career interests.
- Assess your skills and interests by visiting Peer Career at the Student Union.
- BEGIN YOUR RESUME! What do you want your resume to look like in four years?
- Attend fall Career Action Days and the spring Career Success Series each year.
- Register for your ASU Career Gear and attend an orientation on how to utilize this resource.
- Join the Career Listserve, an email distribution list regarding career related topics and job postings.
- Think about relevant summer work experiences that you can pursue.
Sophomore Year
Develop "marketable" skills by doing some of the following:
- Get involved in leadership positions on campus.
- Consider shadowing an alumnus who works in a field you are interested in pursuing - do this every semester and you can utilize the Career Information Network (CIN) to find an alumnus.
- Check out the Walker College of Business website for a list of business club.
- Volunteer in community programs, visit the ACT office.
- Research careers by talking to people in the community who currently have jobs in which you are interested and by utilizing the Career Information Network (CIN) (refer to website)
- Visit the Career Development Center and find out what workshops are being offered.
- Declare a major and visit the Walker College of Business Academic Advising office to plan your remaining class schedule so you can participate in an internship and/or study abroad. Make your appointment early in the semester.
- Attend a career fair every semester so you don't wait until you are a senior to go to your first one.
- Update your resume.
- Update what you will need to do for a summer or semester abroad. What is the process?
- What are you doing this summer? Is it career related? How can relevant work experiences build your resume?
Junior Year
Continue developing your "marketable" skills. Remember: What will make YOU STAND OUT?
- If you haven't already, begin your internship search at the beginning of your junior year.
- Continue to update your resume every semester.
- Attend workshops sponsored by the Career Development Center.
- Develop your interviewing and job seeking skills.
- Schedule a "Mock Interview" with the Career Development Center.
- Keep track of your class projects! You can discuss in interviews and put on your resume.
- Investigate "The Executive Skills Luncheon" and business etiquette.
Senior Year
You have finally made it and you are ready to market yourself and all the skills/ experiences that you have been involved with over the last few years.
- First semester of your senior year - START INTERVIEWING!
- Conduct salary research and explore graduate school options.
- Compile a list of everyone you know who can assist in your job search.
- Continue to develop your interviewing and job seeking skills.
- Focus on your career preferences (place of work, job description, small-v-large company, etc....).
- Visit the Walker College of Business Academic Advising Office to do a GRADUATION AUDIT! Make your appointment at the beginning of the semester!
