What is the difference between receiving academic credit for your internship and not receiving credit?
- You must meet requirements and be admitted to the College of Business
- You must receive approval from your Faculty Advisor
- You can receive between 6-9 hours of credit depending on your major
- You must pay tuition and fees
- Your internship will appear on your transcript
- You do not have to be admitted to the College of Business

Do I meet the requirements?
In order to receive academic credit for your internship, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have been admitted to the Walker College of Business.
- Your must have faculty advisor approval.
- You must be in good academic standing with the Walker College of Business.
- You may not enroll in additional course work during the internship period without PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL by the Assistant Dean. Before considering a student's request for a waiver of policy, the Assistant Dean requires a letter from the employer stating that they are aware of the student taking classes while completing the internship and foresee no scheduling problems.
- If you plan to do a marketing internship, you must complete MKT 3050 with a C or better prior to the internship.
- Procedures vary slightly for HCM and ACC majors.
How many hours of credit can I receive?
- You can receive between 6-9 credit hours, depending on your major.
- You must complete a minimum of 400 hours of work in order to receive 6 hours of credit and work a minimum of 600 hours to receive 9 hours of credit.
If I receive credit, how much does it cost?
- You must register and pay regular tuition and fees for 6-9 semester hours of academic credit.
- There is an insurance premium of $20 per student and this will be included in your tuition bill.
Who is my Faculty Internship Advisor?
There is a faculty internship advisor for every major. This advisor must approve all internships for academic credit and he/she will communicate with you throughout your internship.
The Faculty Advisor's responsibility is to supervise internships taken for academic credit. In addition to the work experience, each department has academic requirements e.g., journals, papers, presentations, which must be satisfactorily completed.
What are the procedures for earning credit for an internship?
- Meet with your Faculty Advisor or the College of Business Internship Coordinator to discuss eligibility requirements.
- Develop your resume, register for your Career Gear Account and join the Career Listserve.
- Obtain a copy of the Employer Manual from your Faculty Advisor or the College of Business Internship Coordinator.
- Begin contacting potential employers. We will provide you with leads and the resources to help you in your search, but it is ultimately YOUR responsibility to contact employers.
- Once you have a commitment from an employer have the employer sign the Internship Agreement and provide you with a job description.
- You will also need to sign the Internship Agreement.
- Take completed, signed Internship Agreement to your Faculty Advisor. You will leave the Employer Manual with the employer and the evaluation form is to be mailed to the College of Business Internship Coordinator prior to the conclusion of the internship.
- Once your Faculty Advisor signs the Internship Agreement, bring to the Career Services office The College of Business Internship Coordinator (2019A Raley Hall), will then enroll you in the internship.
- IMPORTANT - All paperwork MUST be submitted to the College of Business Internship Coordinator before the student is allowed to register for the internship.
- Make sure that you do not owe any fees to the Office of Student Accounts, otherwise you will have a Registration Hold on your account and will be unable to register for the internships.
- YOU MUST REGISTER FOR THE INTERNSHIP FOR THE SEMESTER DURING WHICH THE WORK IS BEING PERFORMED, PER A DIRECTIVE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.
- The College of Business Internship Coordinator will mail a reminder letters to employers concerning completion of the employer evaluation form in the Employer Manual four weeks before the internship is over. Employers are asked to submit the evaluations within two weeks.
- If employer evaluations are not received within two weeks of mailing, the College of Business Internship Coordinator will advise the Faculty Advisors and they will follow-up with employers.
- The College of Business Internship Coordinator notifies the Office of Undergraduate Advising of students who have not completed internship requirements.
- A grade of "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" is submitted to the Registrar based on evaluations by your Employer Supervisor and Faculty Advisor, satisfactory completion of all academic and administrative requirements, and payment of tuition and fees.
- Interns are also asked to complete a confidential assessment of their internship experience, which is used by the College in evaluating the Faculty Advisors and the internship program.
