Advising the Business Leaders of Tomorrow

Walker College of Business - Transfer Students

Each year, a large number of the new students accepted to Appalachian State University are transfer students from other universities and community colleges. Transfer students must attend an academic orientation prior to beginning classes at ASU to assist with a smooth transition to this campus and to allow the student the opportunity to meet with an academic advisor to discuss academic plans and to register for classes.

Transfer students enrolling for the first time at ASU begin with their records in University College and work with a general advisor during orientation. Transfer students are often eligible to officially declare a major during orientation or sometime in the first semester at Appalachian. This is done in the University College Advising Center in D. D. Dougherty.

Although transfer students pursuing business majors work with general advisors in University College during orientation, the College of Business Advising Office is happy to meet with these students prior to orientation to discuss the students' academic plans. [Transfer students should be aware that the COB advising Office cannot officially evaluate their transfer course work. Transfer evaluations are done by the Office of Admissions and, for upper level courses or course work that is more than ten years old, the department chairs.] Students interested in meeting with a business advisor should contact the COB Advising Center at 828-262-2700.

Tranfer Credit Evaluations

Who evaluates lower level course work?
Credit from other post-secondary institutions transferring in as lower level course work at Appalachian State University is evaluated by the Office of Admissions.  Students who have been accepted to ASU and have submitted a transcript from all other schools they have previously attended will receive a transcript evaluation from ASU admissions indicating how their lower level course work will count at ASU.

Who evaluates upper level course work?
Students hoping to get credit for 3000 or 4000 level course work at ASU from courses taken at another institution or for course work that is more than ten years old must get the approval of the chairperson of the department housing that course at ASU.  Typically the chairperson will want to see a catalog course description, the course syllabus or the textbook used in the course.  This course work will show up on the transcript evaluation as elective credit until it has been approved to be counted as equivalent to a 3000/4000 level course by the chairperson and that approval processed by the Registrar's Office.

Who should I contact for upper level business course approval?
You must complete a Petition for Undergraduate Transfer Credit (the instructions and petition are available online at www.registrar.appstate.edu/transfer) and take it to the appropriate chair below:

Accounting (ACC) - Dr. Tim Forsyth
Economics (ECO) - Dr. John Whitehead
Finance and Banking (FIN, LAW) - Dr. David Marlett
Computer Information Systems (CIS, POM, SCM) -
