Advising the Business Leaders of Tomorrow

Walker College of Business Academic Advising

Student Advisee Responsibilities

The relationship between the advisor and advisee is one of shared responsibility. While your advisors in the Walker College of Business will be available to assist you with setting academic goals which relate to your interest and abilities and will help you to develop an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements, you are ultimately responsible for all aspects of your education.

Advisors can help you to understand your options, to make informed decision and to avoid unnecessary mistakes, but only if you take the initiative to ask for their assistance.

Your responsibilities in the advising relationship are:
  • To make an advising appointment early in the semester and to show up for that appointment on time and prepared with a list of questions and a tentative schedule (if you wait until the weeks just prior to preregistration to try to make an advising appointment, it is likely that you may not be able to see an advisor before you are eligible to pre-register for classes).
  • To be familiar with the requirements of the major(s) which you are pursuing and the policies and procedures set forth by the university and the Walker College of Business.
  • To register for classes as early as you are eligible to do so. If you are unable to get into a class you need, you should contact the chairperson of the department immediately. If you have not attempted to register at your earliest assigned pre-registration time, it is unlikely that the chairperson will force add you to a closed class, even if it means your graduation will be delayed.
  • To observe academic deadlines. Some important deadlines include drop/add deadlines, deadlines for filing a repeat form, deadlines for registering for proficiency tests and grad audits, and deadlines for applying to graduate, etc.
  • To be aware of the courses officially listed on your schedule. You should periodically check your schedule to be sure the courses listed on your schedule are those that you expect; you should do this immediately when you have made a change to your schedule. You will not be granted an exception to policy based on the argument that a change you thought you had made a change to your schedule did not go through.
  • To inform the Advising Office immediately whenever you experience a problem which prevented you from adding or dropping a class by the deadline or which disrupts your ability to attend class or to focus on your education and to perform your best work.
