Walker College of Business Academic Advising FAQ
A. You can choose to follow any catalog that is in place anytime while you are enrolled at ASU as long as you finish the requirements within six years of the catalog. Typically, when a major curriculum changes, it is improving so moving to the newer catalog makes sense. However, if the curriculum has changed quite a bit and you have already covered a lot of the requirements under the older curriculum, you may be better off sticking with the older catalog. It is probably best to discuss this with an advisor before making any changes.
A. If you are having problems getting the GPA you need to be admitted to the COB or to get off academic probation, you should consider some of the following strategies:
- Repeat classes in which you earned low grades
- Take courses outside the COB in areas you are interested in while working on improving your GPA
- Take a lighter load during the regular semester and make up the hours during summer school (so that you can really focus on the classes you take)
If you have questions about what GPA you need this semester to reach your desired cumulative GPA, talk with an advisor.
A. If you repeat a course in order to replace a low grade, you must file a repeat form with the Registrar’s Office by the last day of the exam period of the term in which you are repeating the class. Otherwise, both grades will be calculated into your GPA. You can repeat up to four courses for a new grade (or five courses if you entered prior to fall 2007). The original grade will stay on your transcript, but will not be calculated into your GPA. You can only use a repeat course on a course one time.
A. All ASU students using catlogs from Fall 1997 through Summer 2009 must complete a number of specially designated courses distributed throughout the curriculum. These courses introduce students to essential skills or knowledge in the areas of writing (W), speaking (S), numerical data (ND), computer (C), multicultural (MC), and cross-disciplinary (CD).
For COB majors, most of these are met automatically with courses you have to take anyway. The area that requires special attention is the multicultural designator area (MC). You need to carefully plan your course selection to include enough MC designators in order to complete this requirement.
Transfer students who fall under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement and students seeking a second degree must only meet the special designator requirements for the major.
A. The university allows one semester to complete an incomplete. The professor can limit that time within that semester. If you have received a grade of "I", you should get in touch with your professor to find out what you must do to complete the course and how much time you have to do that. If you enroll in the class again, the grade of "I" in the first class will change to an "F". You can file a repeat form to remove that grade of "F" from your cumulative GPA if you complete the course a second time and you still have repeats left to use. A grade of "I" that has not been resolved by the end of the designated time will become a grade of "F". Students with any grades of "I" on their transcripts will not be admitted to the College of Business.
A. No! The prerequisites for MGT 4750/4760 are senior status and completion of all 2000/3000 level COB core classes (and, for MGT 4760, two international business courses). The prerequisites for MGT 4750/MGT 760 are clearly stated in the General Bulletin, on the check sheets and on the progress sheets. Students should plan their schedules to assure that these prerequisites have been met prior to enrolling in MGT 4750/MGT 4760. This class is to be taken in the very last semester unless the student is doing and internship or study abroad during the last semester.
A. Any senior wanting a seat in MGT 4750/4760 must first complete the graduation audit process. Students must request a graduation audit by the advertised deadline (about four weeks into the semester) in order to get a permit to take MGT 4760. Click here to request a graduation audit.
A. BUS 4000 is the new one hour capstone course that is a part of the General Education curriculum. It is only required of students who are using a Fall 2009 or later catalog. As with MGT 4750 (which is still required of all students), students must complete all 2000 and 3000 level business courses prior to taking BUS 4000. However, unlike MGT 4750, students do not have to have their grad audit completed prior to taking it.
A. No! There are a handful of upper level business courses that specifically state in the bulletin: - "This course is not open to business majors for credit". Two of these are MGT 3010 and FIN 3010 which are intended for non business majors only
COB students cannot take these courses as COB electives or free electives and will get NO CREDIT towards graduation for these courses. It is the student’s responsibility to check the bulletin for course descriptions and notes such as this before you enroll in a course.
A. For Hospitality & Tourism Management or Health Care Management majors, your internship is required and counts as a required class. Finance & Banking majors, Computer Information Systems majors, Management majors, Marketing majors, and Risk Management and Insurance can count 3 of the internship hours as major electives and the others as COB electives or upper level free electives. Economics majors can count 6 hours of internship credit towards the economics electives (or toward COB electives or upper level free electives). For all other COB majors, the internship will count only as COB electives or upper level free electives. If you are interested in more information about internships, contact Ms. Heidi Ragan, 2119A Raley Hall (phone: 262-7579).
