Walker College of Business Accounting Internships

The Department of Accounting has a very active internship program which offers accounting majors the opportunity to earn college credit while gaining valuable experience in the accounting profession! The recruiting process for the internship program generally begins the fall semester of the students' senior year with the internship occurring during the spring semester.

Timeline

Beginning in early January, most interns work either in audit (ten weeks) or tax (fifteen weeks) although sometimes students may work in other areas such as information systems. There are also opportunities for students to work in industry. Students receive six credit hours for 10-week internships or nine credit hours for 15-week internships.

Ten-week interns return to campus the Monday after Spring Break to take two accelerated courses, Intermediate Accounting III (ACC 4550) and Taxation of Corporations (ACC 4580). Fifteen-week interns return to campus after April 15 to take a "super-accelerated" accounting elective, usually Internal Auditing (ACC4760), over the last two weeks of the semester.

Programs

Programs to prepare students for the internship begin in the Spring semester of the Junior Year, with a series of informational meetings called Junior Year Experience.

In early fall, recruiters from approximately 20 firms host a series of "Meet the Firms" nights for internship candidates at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. This event allows students and firms to meet in a relaxed setting and share information about one another. In early September, the national CPA firm, McGladrey & Pullen, conducts mock interviews for all internship candidates and provides suggestions for improvement.
